Goals
This website has been established to share information about the Diyari language and culture spoken by the Dieri people, who live in South Australia and western New South Wales. It involves collaboration between Elder knowledge holders, other community members, and non-Aboriginal researchers, to support the learning and continuation of the Diyari language.
The website includes language learning reference materials like dictionaries and grammar, and links to online resources such as podcast episodes and blog posts. We plan to extend this to language learning resources as they are developed in the future.
People
The main author of materials on this website is Peter K. Austin, who has been studying Diyari for over 50 years. Peter is a retired language researcher who lives in London. He bgan his research on Diyari in 1972 as an undergraduate student and spent 1974 doing fieldwork in northern South Australia with Dieri teachers for his BA honours degree. From 1975 to 1978 he did a PhD on the grammar of Diyari, recording around 70 hours of interviews and conversations with a range of speakers (see Acknowledgements). He has continued to work on Diyari since 1978, and has published a wide range of books and articles about Diyari — these are listed in the References section. From 2020 to 2023 he held a Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship which provided funds for research assistance and travel and accommodation to visit Dieri country and work with community members.
Development of this website was supported by David Nathan, an experienced linguist, IT specialist, and web and app developer (see here).
